Green cardamom wholesale: quality is more than pod size

Green cardamom—also known as elaichi—is purchased by spice wholesalers, grocery retailers, distributors, sweet manufacturers, restaurants and food processors. It is valued for its distinctive aroma and flavour. In wholesale buying, buyers often compare pod size categories such as 6 mm, 7 mm or 8 mm, along with colour and appearance.

Size is useful, but it should not be the only buying criterion. A sound procurement decision considers the complete lot: size consistency, colour, aroma, pod condition, splits, seeds, moisture, cleanliness, packing, sample-to-lot consistency and final landed cost.

Decide the intended use and target customer

Before requesting a quotation, explain how you plan to use or sell the cardamom. A retailer selling premium whole pods may emphasise appearance and size uniformity. A food manufacturer may prioritise aroma, flavour consistency and processing requirements. A wholesaler may need a reliable specification that can be repeated across orders.

  • Whole-pod resale: agree on size, colour, pod condition and acceptable splits.
  • Sweet shops, bakeries and food service: discuss aroma, flavour consistency and the form required for the recipe.
  • Grinding or processing: clarify whether whole pods, seeds or another form is required.
  • Distribution: consider repeat availability, packing, order quantity and destination-wise freight.

Understand common cardamom size descriptions

Green cardamom may be discussed using millimetre-based size descriptions such as 6 mm, 7 mm and 8 mm. These terms generally refer to pod size categories, but buyers should confirm the measurement method, tolerance and grading basis used by the supplier. A label such as ‘8 mm’ should not be treated as a guarantee that every pod in the bag meets that exact size.

Ask whether the quoted size is a minimum, average, screen size or trade category. Also ask what proportion of the lot may fall below the stated size. If size consistency is commercially important, include it in the purchase specification.

The quality factors to check

Pod size and uniformity

Look for consistency within the offered category. A sample can reveal whether the lot contains a narrow or wide range of pod sizes. For repeat orders, record the approved sample and agreed size description.

Colour

Green colour can influence visual appeal in whole-pod retail markets. However, colour alone does not prove freshness, aroma, grade or food safety. Ask the supplier to describe the actual lot and disclose any variation.

Aroma

A characteristic cardamom aroma is an important sensory indicator for many buyers. Check the sample in a clean environment and compare it with a known reference if available. A weak, stale or unusual smell should be discussed before purchase.

Pod integrity and splits

Inspect for closed pods, open or split pods, crushed material and damaged pods. The acceptable proportion depends on the agreed grade and application. A buyer selling whole pods may require a different specification from a processor that opens pods for seeds.

Seeds and filling

If seed content or pod filling matters to your business, ask whether the supplier can provide a relevant specification or sample-based assessment. Do not assume pod size alone tells you how well-filled pods are.

Moisture and storage

Moisture and storage conditions affect cardamom during warehousing and transit. Agree on any required moisture limit and test method. Protect the product from moisture, excessive heat, strong odours and direct sunlight after receipt.

Cleanliness

Check for dust, stems and other foreign matter. Clarify whether the lot is cleaned or sorted and what that description means in the supplier’s process.

Compare cardamom grades without relying on labels alone

Suppliers may use names such as Small, Bold, Extra Bold, Super Bold, mixed or size-based categories. These terms can be useful for trade discussions, but do not assume every supplier applies them identically. Ask for the size range, colour description, pod condition, splits tolerance and sample for the exact lot.

When two suppliers quote the same size category, compare samples and written specifications. Confirm whether both quotes refer to the same net weight, packing type, quality parameters and delivery destination.

How to inspect a cardamom sample

  1. Confirm that the sample represents the lot currently available for sale.
  2. Check the pod size spread and consistency.
  3. Observe colour variation and the proportion of open, split or damaged pods.
  4. Check aroma and discuss any unusual smell.
  5. If seed content or moisture matters, ask for an agreed assessment or test result.
  6. Record the approved sample, supplier, date, grade description and order reference.
  7. Confirm in writing that the bulk lot will meet the agreed specification.

Calculate the true landed cost

Cardamom prices can vary significantly with grade, size category, crop and market availability. Do not compare price per kilogram without checking the actual lot description. Add packing, freight, handling and other applicable charges to calculate the landed cost at your destination.

Ask whether the quotation is valid for a limited period, whether the quantity is available now and whether the supplier can hold the same specification for a repeat order. Confirm the tax invoice and payment terms before dispatch.

Storage and stock handling after delivery

On receipt, inspect the outer packaging for damage or moisture exposure. Store cardamom in clean, dry, well-ventilated conditions, away from direct sunlight, heat, strong odours and damp floors or walls. Keep bags closed when not in use and follow a stock rotation method such as first-in, first-out, subject to your business’s quality controls.

If a consignment arrives with damaged packaging, unusual odour or visible quality variation, document the issue promptly with photographs, invoice details, lot references and receiving records. Follow the supplier’s stated complaint process.

Frequently asked questions

What does 8 mm green cardamom mean?

It is a size-based trade description. Ask the supplier whether the measurement is a minimum, screen category or another grading basis, and confirm the tolerance and sample.

Is greener cardamom always better?

Not necessarily. Colour is one visual characteristic, but aroma, pod condition, size consistency, cleanliness, storage and the agreed specification also matter.

What is the difference between bold and extra bold cardamom?

These are commercial descriptions often used for larger pod categories. Exact size ranges and tolerances vary, so ask the supplier for the specification behind the label.

Should I buy cardamom based only on size?

No. Compare aroma, colour, pod integrity, splits, cleanliness, sample consistency and landed cost as well as size.

How should bulk green cardamom be stored?

Keep it in clean, dry conditions, protected from moisture, direct sunlight, heat and strong odours. Keep packaging closed and rotate stock appropriately.
